TORONTO – Environment Canada has ended a severe thunderstorm watch across much of southern Ontario, including Toronto and the Greater Toronto Area.

Earlier Sunday evening, the weather agency issued a tornado watch briefly for London, Goderich and Sarnia. The warnings were dropped just before 7:30.

A funnel cloud had been reported in Millbank earlier.

By 8 p.m. severe thunderstorm warnings were issue for Vaughan, Richmond Hill, Markham, Hamilton, Halton, Peel, Huron, Perth, London, Middlesex, Sarnia, Lambton, Waterloo, Wellington, Windsor, Essex, Chatham and Kent regions.

A severe thunderstorm watch was also issued for Toronto, Newmarket, Richmond Hill and the GTA. Also included are the Dunville, Caledonia, Haldimand, Niagara, Oxford, Brant, Simcoe, Delhi and Norfolk regions.

The main threat was heavy rainfall, winds and hail.

Hydro One reported thousands of people were without power in parts of southwestern and central Ontario. On social media there were reports of flight delays at Toronto’s Pearson Airport.

Remember to keep an eye on the weather and if threatening weather approaches, take shelter immediately in the lower part of a house. If you’re unable to get into a basement, be sure to take shelter away from windows and outer walls.

A watch is issued when conditions are favourable for severe weather. A warning is when hazardous weather is imminent or occurring.
